Sasha Canter won the Brass Category Final of the 2022 BBC Young Musician competition.


He went on to secure a place in the Grand Final at Bridgewater Hall, where he performed Alexander Arutunian’s Trumpet Concerto with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Mark Wigglesworth, broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and 4.

In 2022, Sasha was a finalist in the “Rizzardo Bino” International Competition for young soloists in Italy. He also traveled to Sicily in 2021 and 2022 to take part in international masterclasses led by the eminent trumpet players and teachers, Rheinhold Friedrich and Kristian Steenstrup. In 2017, Sasha joined the Junior Guildhall School of Music and Drama and during his time there he was awarded the Brass Prize and was runner up in the prestigious Lutine Prize.

At the age of 13, Sasha joined the National Children’s Orchestra and the CBSO Youth Orchestra, with whom he has now played for six years. He was a member of the National Youth Brass Band GB for two years, 2019-2021, playing solo cornet on every course and recently spent a year as a member of the National Youth Orchestra, culminating in a televised BBC Prom concert in August 2022.

Sasha began learning the trumpet at the age of 8, starting lessons at school in Abingdon. Sasha has been taught by Simon Munday for the past 6 years and has recently started his studies with Mark David at the Royal Academy of Music. Sasha is also learning the baroque (natural) trumpet and will also be studying this with Bob Farley at the Royal Academy of Music.
