Our artists BBC Young Musician Artists Rob Burton - Saxophone, 2018 Finalist London-based saxophonist Rob Burton won the Woodwind Category Final of BBC Young Musician 2018 at the age of eighteen. He went on to secure a place in the Grand Final at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall, where he performed with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra conducted by Mark Wigglesworth, broadcast live on BBC 4 and BBC Radio 3. Highlights since then include performances across the UK and Channel Islands as part of the Cheltenham, Harrogate, and Oundle International Festivals amongst many others as well as being invited further afield as part of the European Soloists Festival in Caracas, Venezuela. He has appeared as soloist with Hungtingdon Philharmonic, Solihull Symphony, Lambeth Wind, Bromley and Harrow Symphony Orchestras. In 2020 Rob returns to Switzerland at the Arosa Klassik Festival and premiers concerti by Paul Carr and Michael Lawson in London . This season he gives recitals at Cayman Art’s and Thaxted Festivals alongside concerto performances with English Pro Musica and Ealing Youth Orchestra in collaboration with London Mozart Players. A current Drake Calleja Scholar for 2019/20, Rob was also selected as the Yamaha Scholar performing at Music Teacher Awards for Excellence 2019, with pianist Konya Kanneh-Mason. Other awards include the Sussex Prize for Woodwind at the Royal Over-Seas League 68th Annual Music Competition and 2019 Hans Schaeuble Award at the Arosa Klassik Festival. Rob currently studies Classical Saxophone on a full scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music with Huw Wiggin and privately in Zürich with Lars Mlekusch. He previously studied with Paul Stevens (saxophone) and Derek Hannigan (clarinet) at the Junior Guildhall School of Music, where he was the Sax.co.uk Scholarship holder. A keen chamber musician, Rob performs with his saxophone quartet ‘Kumori Quartet’ and sax/violin/piano trio, ‘Kavinsky Trio’. He was also Principal Saxophone with the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Great Britain. Rob is grateful for the support of YCAT through their aftercare scheme for BBC Young Musician finalists.
