Philip Higham is rapidly emerging as one of the most prominent young cellists from the UK. In 2008 he won 1st Prize in the International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Leipzig (the first British prize winner since the competition began in 1950), and in 2009 1st Prize in the International Lutoslawski Cello Competition in Warsaw. He went on to give recitals in Lake Maggiore (Italy), the Bachwoche in Ansbach, the Leipzig BachFest, Edinburgh Fringe and Lake District Summer Music Festivals.
Over the last year Philip has appeared as soloist with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra and Sinfonia Cymru, given recitals at Bridgewater Hall, Purcell Room, Wigmore Hall, the Jacqueline du Pré Music Building, Spitalfields, Newbury and Ribchester Festivals, and performed Finzi‘s Concerto to critical acclaim at St. John’s Smith Square. He also returned to give concerts in Northern Italy and Germany and toured throughout Scotland as a Tunnell Trust award winner.
This autumn Philip performs the complete Bach Cello Suites at the Lammermuir Festival in Scotland and takes part in the IMS Prussia Cove Ensemble tour appearing at the Hall for Truro, St. George's Bristol and Wigmore Hall (30 Sept). Engagements during the 2010/11 season include recitals at Perth Concert Hall, the Royal National Concert Hall in Glasgow, Wigmore Hall (2 Mar) and the North Norfolk Music Festival. His debut recording for Sonimage featuring works by Debussy, Fauré, Britten and Bridge, is due for release in 2011.
Born in Edinburgh in 1985, Philip studied at the Royal Northern College of Music with Emma Ferrand and Ralph Kirshbaum. He graduated in 2007 with First class Honours and was immediately selected as an International Artist Diploma student, supported by the Jellis bequest. During his studies he won numerous prizes and awards including the 2004 Frederick Phelps Solo Bach Competition and the Sir John Barbirolli Cello Prize. In 2008 he received a silver medal from the Worshipful Company of Musicians and in 2009 was selected for representation by Young Concert Artists Trust (YCAT).
As a soloist Philip‘s work has included performances of Boccherini and Vivaldi Concertos with the Orchestra Camera Di Caserta in the Autunno Musicale Festival in Naples, Haydn’s Concerto in C with the Mendelssohn Kammerorchester in Leipzig and performances of the Finzi Concerto and Elgar Concertos in London. He has given recitals in the International Stichting Masterclass in Apeldoorn (The Netherlands), the Gioventù Musicale d‘Italia, Victoria Arts Festival in Malta and appeared in the 2007 Manchester International Cello Festival. During 2007 and 2008 he was invited to the International Musicians’ Seminar in Prussia Cove where he studied with Ralph Kirshbaum and Míklos Pérenyi and participated in the Open Chamber Music.
