About Helen Sherman

Helen Sherman 4 Born in Australia, Helen Sherman studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Following her success in the 2007 Australian Singing Competition she was awarded a scholarship to the Royal Northern College of Music to study with Peter Wilson where she was the first to be awarded the International Artists Diploma in Opera (sponsored by the Zochonis Charitable Trust). In 2009 she was selected for representation by Young Concert Artists Trust (YCAT).

Over the last year, Helen has given debut concerts at Wigmore Hall, the Purcell Room, Bridgewater Hall and Royal Albert Hall and appeared with Roger Vignoles and Mikhail Zemtsov in the Cambridge Summer Recital series. At the RNCM she sang the roles of Hélène (Offenbach‘s La Belle Hélène), Sesto (Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito) and Cyrus (Handel's Belshazzar), the latter in a co-production with Manchester Camerata. She also recorded with the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra as part of an International Opera Productions prize and broadcast a recital for ABC Classic FM in Australia.

This summer Helen joined Grange Park Opera performing Suzuki (Madama Butterfly) at the Nevill Holt Festival and covering Clairon (Capriccio) at Grange Park. Future engagements include concerts at Wigmore Hall, an appearance as soloist with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Wagner's Wesendonck Lieder with the Liverpool Mozart Orchestra.

During her first year at the RNCM Helen sang the roles of Varvava (Janacek‘s Katya Kabanova), The Old Lady (Bernstein’s Candide) and Prince Orlofsky (Strauss's Die Fledermaus). An experienced concert soloist, Helen has performed in the United Kingdom, Europe and Australia in works from Bach to Weigl.

In Australia Helen‘s roles included Rosina (The Barber of Seville), The Grand Duchess of Monte-Blanco (Lennox Berkeley’s A Dinner Engagement), Lisetta (Haydn‘s Il mondo della luna), The Angel (Mendelssohn’s Elijah), Third Lady (The Magic Flute) and Cousin Hebe (HMS Pinafore). She was a regular chorus member for Opera Australia, performing in Otello, Il Trovatore, Les Contes d‘Hoffman, Il Trittico and The Gondoliers. Helen has featured on numerous occasions as a soloist on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s ABC Classic FM. She was placed runner-up in the Sydney Macdonald's Operatic Aria competition, finalist in the Opera Foundation Australia Rockend National Opera Studio Award, and award winner in the Australian Singing Competition performing in the finals with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra conducted by Richard Bonynge. She is very grateful for her continued work with Australian teacher Dr. Rowena Cowley.

Helen is grateful to be the recipient of many awards and scholarships from groups including the Australian Music Foundation, the Elizabeth Harwood Trust, the Leverhulme Trust, the Ian Potter Cultural Trust, the Helpmann Family Trust, Ars Musica Australis, The Opera and Arts Support Group Sydney, the Dame Joan Sutherland Society and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
