Described by Gramophone Magazine as ‘one of the finest young string quartets’, the Doric String Quartet is rapidly developing their international profile. In 2008 they won 1st prize in the Osaka International Chamber Music Competition in Japan, 2nd prize at the Premio Paolo Borciani International String Quartet Competition in Italy and the Ensemble Prize at the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in Germany. They were selected for representation by Young Concert Artists Trust (YCAT) in 2006.
At the opening of the 2010/11 season the Quartet tours throughout New Zealand, are resident Quartet at the Australian Chamber Music Camp and give concerts in Sydney and Melbourne. In November they make their USA debut at the Frick Museum in New York and Library of Congress in Washington. Engagements in Europe include recitals at Wigmore Hall (including a world premiere with Brett Dean), the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Berlin Konzerthaus and in Hamburg and Budapest. In 2011 they give debut concerts in Scandinavia and return to Israel and the USA.
Now in its thirteenth season recent highlights over the last year have included a critically acclaimed Haydn evening at Wigmore Hall broadcast by BBC Radio 3, debut recitals in Paris, Milan, Brussels, Lucerne, Frankfurt and Galicia, and visits to the Terra di Siena, Carinthischer Sommer, Schwetzinger, Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Peasmarsh, Isle of Man and East Neuk Festivals. Further afield the Quartet toured throughout Japan and returned to Israel and South East Asia. The Quartet has collaborated with Mark Padmore, Philip Langridge, Ian Bostridge, Chen Halevi, Julius Drake, Piers Lane, Melvyn Tan, the Leopold String Trio and Florestan Trio.
In 2009 the Doric‘s first CD was released on the Wigmore Live label to critical acclaim and was Editor’s Choice in Gramophone. This year the Doric's have recorded two CDs of the complete quartets by Korngold and Walton for Chandos as part of a long-term contract. Future releases will include works by Schumann, Schubert and Bartók and collaborations with Kathryn Stott and Michael Collins.
Formed in 1998 at Pro Corda, The National School for Young Chamber Music Players, in Suffolk, from 2002 the Doric String Quartet studied on the Paris-based ProQuartet Professional Training Program, where they worked with members of the Alban Berg, Artemis, Hagen and LaSalle Quartets and with György Kurtag. The Quartet continue to work with Rainer Schmidt (Hagen Quartet).
In 2000 the Doric String Quartet won the inaugural Bristol Millennium Chamber Music Competition which led to a long-term residency at the Wiltshire Music Centre combining a concerts series with education work across the region. They continue this relationship as ‘Artists in Association’.
