Born in Lancashire, in 2009 Caroline MacPhie completed her studies with Noelle Barker and Audrey Hyland on the Royal Academy of Music Opera course, graduating with distinction. Prior to this she studied French and German at Bristol University and was a postgraduate at the Royal Northern College of Music studying with Caroline Crawshaw. In 2009 she was selected for representation by Young Concert Artists Trust (YCAT).
Over the last year Caroline has given recitals at the Purcell Room, Oxford Lieder and Chichester Festivals and performed Szymanowski‘s Stabat Mater at Cadogan Hall, Handel’s Dixit Dominus at King‘s Place and Vivaldi’s Gloria with the European Union Chamber Orchestra in Spain. She also appeared on BBC Radio 2's Friday Night is Music Night and undertook a series of Johann Strauss Gala Concerts at major venues throughout the UK and Ireland, including the Barbican, Bridgewater, Birmingham Symphony, Usher Hall Edinburgh and National Concert Hall in Dublin.
In 2009 Caroline‘s operatic roles included Nerina (Haydn La Fedeltà Premiata) conducted by Trevor Pinnock, Berenice (Rossini L’Occasione fa il ladro) for Royal Academy Opera and the title role in Janacék‘s Cunning Little Vixen at the Banff Centre in Canada. This autumn she joins Scottish Opera performing the role of Frasquita (Bizet’s Carmen). She goes on to take the role of Nerone in Cambridge Handel Opera Group‘s production of Handel’s Agrippina. Future concert engagements include a recital at Wigmore Hall (1 February) and Mozart's Requiem with the Philharmonia Orchestra.
During her studies Caroline‘s operatic roles included Miss Wordsworth (Albert Herring) for British Youth Opera, Daphne (G. McBurney’s The Airman's Tale) for The Yorke Trust and Dew Fairy (Hänsel und Gretel) for RAO. In 2007 she was a member of Glyndebourne Festival Chorus. She has won numerous prizes and awards including First Prize in the 2008 Emmy Destinn Awards in Prague, a Miriam Licette Scholarship (MBF), the Dame Eva Turner Award and the Blyth-Buesst Opera Prize (RAM), the Schubert Prize and the Claire Croiza Prize for French Song at the RNCM.
An accomplished lieder singer, Caroline is a Britten-Pears Young Artist, has taken part in masterclasses and concerts as a Samling Scholar, and given recitals throughout the UK under the auspices of the Countess of Munster Recital Scheme. As a soloist she has appeared with the Hallé Orchestra at Bridgewater Hall (Vaughan Williams‘ Sinfonia Antartica), the Hanover Band at St. John’s Smith Square (Bach St. John Passion) and sung Poulenc‘s Gloria with Oxford University Orchestra and Schola Cantorum, the title role in Handel’s Athalia with the Britten-Pears Baroque Orchestra and Mozart's Requiem with the Britten-Pears Orchestra at Snape Maltings.
