YCAT PUBLIC FINAL AUDITIONS 2010

Venue: WIGMORE HALL, 36 Wigmore Street, London, W1U 2BP

No set number of musicians are selected

CONDITIONS

  • Musicians must be based in the United Kingdom and be completing/have completed a recognised course of study for their instrument/voice.

If your nationality is from outside the European Union you must have the correct visa to be able to work in the UK.

  • The age limit for instrumentalists is 28 and for singers 30 (on May 22nd 2010)
  • Entrants must NOT be under commercial management at the time of application
  • YCAT reserves the right to refuse auditions to any applicant at its absolute discretion and without giving reasons. Depending on the application numbers, pre-selection based upon the original application may be necessary before the preliminary rounds.
  • Artists who have been heard before may apply again and will be considered for an audition at the discretion of YCAT
  • Artists requiring accompanists and page turners will be expected to make their own arrangements and cover all expenses involved.

REPERTOIRE FOR ALL ROUNDS

Candidates may choose their own repertoire but should submit a programme of works contrasting in style and period (minimum seven works for instrumentalists, minimum fifteen songs/arias for voice).

N.B. YCAT management and jury are interested in imaginative and innovative programming, particularly in the choice and presentation of new works alongside older repertoire.

Preliminary Auditions

Each entrant will be heard for up to 10 minutes beginning with a work of their choice. The panel will then ask for a selection from the submitted audition repertoire list.

Semi-final Auditions

Each entrant will be heard for up to 20 minutes beginning with the piece of their choice. The panel will then ask for a selection from the submitted audition repertoire list.

Final Auditions

Entrants who progress to the final round will be invited to meet with YCAT to discuss their programme as well as future aims and ambitions.

PIANO

  • Works by Bach or Scarlatti
  • Classical Sonatas
  • Romantic works
  • Works of the French Impressionist School
  • 20th/21st century works (post 1980)
  • Own Choice

STRINGS

  • Works of JS Bach
  • Classical Sonata/concerto
  • Romantic Sonatas
  • Major concerto (19th/20th century)
  • 20th/21st century works (post 1980)
  • Own Choice

VOICE

  • Extracts from oratorios (x 2)
  • German lieder (x 2)
  • Songs in English (x 2)
  • French song (x 2)
  • Operatic arias (x 3)
  • Own Choice (x 4)

WIND/BRASS

  • Seven contrasting works including at least one unaccompanied work, one major concerto and one duo sonata. At least two works must be from the 20th century onwards.

ENSEMBLES

  • Seven contrasting works including one by Mozart or Haydn (if relevant), one by Beethoven or Schubert (if relevant), and one 20th/21st century work.

PIANO CHAMBER/ACCOMPANIMENT

(Choice of either vocal or instrumental programme for first round with the other required for the semi-finals. Applicants must provide their own vocal and instrumental duo partners for the auditions)

  • 2 Contrasting works from major solo repertoire
  • 30 min vocal programme including German Lieder, French Song and at least one orchestral reduction
  • Instrumental Programme including 2 contrasting duo sonatas and one concerto orchestral reduction
